The Beautiful Girls
Review by Ashley Allred of MusicBailout.net
Australian group The Beautiful Girls have never disappointed us before, from their laid back debut “Morning Sun” to their more progressive previous album “Ziggurats”. But their latest work, “Spooks” is the groups culminating masterpiece.
Mat McHugh moves you with his intense lyrics and takes you on a journey in each and every song. He locked himself away from the world for close to a year to pour his heart into every word, beat and melody you hear on the album and it sure paid off. Their music is raw art at its finest.
“My Mind is an Echo Chamber” is one of the more dubbed out songs on the album and is a prime example of the group’s wide range. Bruce Braybrooke pounds out an enticing marching band like beat on the snare drum as echoed dub effects ring in the background. You can feel the emotion permeating off the lyrics as McHugh sings about the constant internal questioning of the things we should have said or done but never did.
The track “After all this Time” has a more calypso feel to it and is really catchy. I had it stuck in my head all day after hearing it for the first time. The lyrics tell the adventurous story of a modern Bonnie and Clyde love affair. It makes use of the increasingly popular ukulele, and a beach party playlist staple.
The song “Rockers” plays homage to the legendary 1978 movie of the same name, starting out with a popular clip from the film. The deep funky bass line, played by Paul Bromley, is front and center as synthesized keys and juicy horn solos easily make this my favorite song on the album. I was surprised to hear a verse from Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” towards the end but it fits perfectly. I would love to see this one performed live.
I had such a hard time trying to classify the sound of The Beautiful Girls but the truth is you just can’t. Their sound is so unique that it would almost be insulting to try and cement it into one genre or another.
“Spooks” is, hands down, my favorite album of the year so far.
